Scope

Design of substation grounding for personnel safety — step/touch voltage.

Key requirements (7)

  • Substation grounding system safety.
  • Step voltage and touch voltage limits derived from body resistance and fault duration.
  • Allowable touch voltage: E_touch = (1000 + 1.5·ρs)·0.116/√t (Volts) — 50 kg body, fault duration t.
  • Ground grid mesh design via equations 89–94 for IGS factor and step voltage.
  • Soil resistivity testing (Wenner 4-pin method) before design.
  • Ground rod: 3 m × 16 mm Cu-clad steel typical; rebar at substation periphery.
  • Conductor sizing: A = I·√(t·αρ/(TCAP·log((Ko+Tm)/(Ko+Ta)))) — Onderdonk derived.
