ID = OD − 2·WT A = (π/4) × (OD² − ID²) cross-sectional metal area, mm² w = A × ρ × 10⁻⁶ weight per metre, kg/m (ρ in kg/m³) W = w × L total weight, kg

Weight per metre in lb/ft is obtained by converting kg/m × 0.6720. This is exact metal cross-section × density — it does not include weld reinforcement, coating, or lining weight.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include the weight of fittings, flanges or coating?

No. This calculates bare pipe metal weight only, from OD, wall thickness and density. Add fitting, flange, insulation and coating weight separately for a full BOQ or lifting weight.

Why does my calculated weight differ slightly from the ASME B36.10 tabulated weight?

Tabulated weights in B36.10 use a slightly different nominal steel density (0.2836 lb/in³) and rounding conventions. The geometric calculation here is exact for the entered OD/WT/density and will typically be within 1–2% of the tabulated value.

What density should I use for stainless steel?

8000 kg/m³ is the standard reference density for austenitic stainless (304/304L/316/316L) used in ASME and most vendor weight tables.

Can I use this for tube (not pipe) sizes?

Yes — switch to custom OD & wall thickness and enter the actual tube dimensions; the same area × density formula applies to any tubular section.
